Tabletop Project Assembly Steps
by Angola Glassworks

Free Standing Foil Project

This table-top display is made using the copper foil method. Instead of lead came, each glass piece is wrapped in adhesive backed copper. Each individual piece is then covered with solder, then assembled. The design below is about 7" x 10".

Of course it all starts with a design. Actually, two copies were made. One you see above and the other was cut up into templates for the individual pieces.

Each piece is cut from large sheets of glass and trimmed to an exact fit.

Each piece is cut to fit the template.

Each piece of glass is wrapped in copper foil.

Using a soldering iron, each piece is covered with a thin layer of solder.

Above, the individual pieces have been soldered together.

Working from the inside out.

Black patina has been applied to solder around the character to enhance the "cartoon-ish" appearance. Several detail lines have been added using 'liquid solder'. Two white eyes, glasses and hair have been attached to the top surface of the glass.

A small oak stand was built and stained dark espresso. The stand was completed with a satin urethane finish.
